Tug of WAR!

By Bidhata Rai

Gurkha Colour Sergeant Krishna Dura’s friends and juniors remember him as  “a kind hearted and a good man”.

The father of two, Mr. Dura died a hero’s death fighting the Talibans in the frontline in Afghanistan on Saturday (i5th November). He was 36.

“He always wore a smile in his face. We’ll miss him.” says his fellow junior Miland Rai, who was there at the time of Mrs. Dura’s death.

W ith the death of a second Nepalese soldier in southern Afghanistan, the number of British soldiers dead in the war in the desert since 2001 has hit 125.

News of war has never been of good taste unless of course someone receives a bravery award or something of similar stature.

It’s quite sad that this too mostly happens only posthumously.

End War

According to the BBC, public polls last week showed that more than 60 percent of the people want the army back home.

But the Ministry of Defense says that they have an impinging and an extended roles to play in the devastated land.

The family members of soldiers deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq live a life of fear where they die almost everyday; almost every news shatters them and every day they long to hear the sound of their beloved speak.

It’s no ordinary life they are living. They are living on the edge!

Truce!

The Afghan president Harmid Karzai wants to strike a peace deal with the Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Omar is a leader of the Afghan Taliban and headed the government toppled by the US-led invasion in 2001. Since then, he has been in hiding and is believed to be running the insurgency.

“If I hear from [Mullah Omar] that he is willing to come to Afghanistan or to negotiate for peace and for the well-being of the Afghans so that our children are not killed anymore, I as president of Afghanistan will go to any length to provide protection,” Karzai said. (The Guardian, 16 Nov 2008)

According to the Guardian, Karzai, in an hour-long press conference in Kabul said “If I say I want protection for Mullah Omar, the international community has two choices: remove me or leave if they disagree”.

Personal Comment

Why not back the president’s move rather than aggravate the situation in the country?

Why not pull out troops from the country and for once let the government deal with it their way?

At times it becomes essential for one to be left alone; too much interference could be detrimental.

We are in a financial recession and it’ll be wise to spend in rebuilding the economy and preventing global warming than in wars.

So, lets fight recession and global warming rather!!!!
